ANOTHER GOOD ONE BY BURTON COFFMAN

Posted by AL on May. 29, 2013

Burton Coffman (JBC) commentaries are a bit different. All quote from others, but
with him, you'll find 1/2 dozen or more quotations on the same page. He interweaves
them together and mixes them with his own comments. It makes for very readable,
though unusual commentaries. Although one may not agree with him on all points, he
isn't afraid to be alone in his views on a given subject. He really goes after the
"scholars" who comment on the Bible, but say that the accounts therein are myths
or legends (I'd say Daniel & Jonah are the 2 best examples). This review is on
Daniel, but the above comments apply to all of JBC's commentaries.

The commentary on Daniel is another excellent work. In the history section, his view
(and mine) is that the kingdoms in the "great image" of chap 2 are Babylon, Medo-
Persia, Greece, & Rome, and the "kingdom that will never be destroyed", is the
church. In chap 5 he talks about the "problem" of Belshazzar being "king".
Belshazzar was "acting king". That's why he offered to make Daniel the 3rd ruler
in the kingdom, if Daniel could tell him what the writing on the wall meant,
(Belshazzar was 2nd). JBC also deals with who Darius was.

In the prophecy section, JBC gives very helpful explanations of the symbols, i.e. they
have to do with the history of the world until Christ's 2nd coming (and beyond DAN 12:02),
as it effects God's people. He gives how that many of the prophecies point to Christ. He
points out how Christ quoted many parts of Daniel. He gives an excellent account of the
meaning of the 70 weeks. So for one wanting a commentary on Daniel by an author who makes
no secret of his belief that the Bible is the inerrant word of God, and isn't afraid to say
what he believes, this is an excellent commentary to get. Highly recommended.
