Product Description

Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs

Helping you worship God!

850 hymns • wide genre • recovered verses • a teaching hymnal

This is the newest hymnal published among those associated with churches of Christ. Its goal is to help saints glorify God in musical worship. One of the most noticeable features is the use of Phrased Notation. The width of the hymn is determined by the words and phrases, not the size of the page.

Additional highlights include: Smyth sewn binding, so it lays flat. The dimensions give it the feel of a “handbook,” literally – it fits the hand well. Good use of white space, as in a book of poetry, and the hymn selection, a mix of old and new, is marvelous.

Best selection of songs in one book

Posted by Charles Gaines on Nov. 24, 2015

I appreciate the editors of this song book for compiling favorites that are mine also. Well put together which makes it easier for song leaders. I am showing this to other congregations in hopes it will be used by many people.

    Need larger print

Posted by Michael Glaesemann on Nov. 16, 2015

Many of the aged need larger print. That is the request I have heard from most in our small congregation.
I love the book. Thanks to RJ paving the way with Hymns for Worship, this new hymnal is for sound Christians that will suffice for many decades to come.

    The best hymnal out there

Posted by Jeremy Nettles on Oct. 12, 2015

I starting using this hymnal shortly after it came out, and have been thrilled with it ever since. As with any hymnal, personal preferences come into play and a few aspects of Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs begin to annoy, but these are so few and so minor as to be inconsequential in the greater scheme of things. You won't find a hymnal with a better selection of songs (theologically, musically, devotionally, and any other -ally you care to name), or with more consistent, well thought out formatting, or better quality of manufacturing. It's an absolute gem. Stack it up against Sacred Selections, Hymns for Worship, Songs of Faith and Praise, Praise for the Lord, and Songs for Worship and Praise, and there's no competition; Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Songs is quite obviously the best of the bunch, by a clear margin.

    Hymnal review

Posted by Unknown on May. 20, 2015

This book is an excellent mix of old standards and newer hymns. The format is easy to read, and I like the inclusion of shape notes. There were a few songs that I missed, but realize that one book cannot hold them all!

    Great Book of Songs

Posted by Paul Jones. Huntingdon, TN on Mar. 20, 2015

It is easy to use and follow. At our first singing, we went way past our hour planned. But some had a hard time with new lyrics. My wife missed not having [the hymn] God's Family. I will be looking for a supplement to fill the void later.

Good mix of old and new hymns

Posted by Kellen Ketchersid on Jan. 16, 2015

I am part of a smaller congregation with a diverse range of ages. Our goal was to find a songbook that would be uplifting and contain familiar content for all of our members. For those reasons, we really like this song book! I particularly appreciate the effort the editors made to include a good mix of older and newer songs.

A few other notes: The book contains some unique formatting can be a little confusing in the beginning (presumably to contain a larger number of songs). This isn't a big issue, but it takes some getting used to. Also, there are a few songs that have different arrangements than what I'd prefer. Although, to be fair, I would think that's probably the case with any song book. Other than that, we really love it, and I think it is excellent! I would definitely recommend it.

    Not a big fan!

Posted by Unknown on Dec. 10, 2014

I totally agree with the comments of James W. Tackett on Jun. 24, 2013. Also, was any effort made to correct unscriptural statements, eg: "...and with Jesus REIGN" forever"?

[NOTE FROM THE EDITORS: A considerable effort was made to ensure scriptural content in Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs. Regarding the line "and with Jesus reign forever" in "Where the Gates Swing Outward Never" (number 709 in PHASS), it is the author's original and it echos the following scriptures.

    2 Timothy 2:12
If we endure, We shall also reign with Him.
If we deny Him, He also will deny us.

    Revelation 22:5
There shall be no night there:
They need no lamp nor light of the sun, for the Lord God gives them light.
And they shall reign forever and ever.

The editors would be happy to discuss this with the person who originally left this comment. If you will contact the bookstore, contact information will be provided. Thanks.]

    Phrased Notation

Posted by Unknown on Nov. 6, 2014

Excellent book as far as content. I'm not a fan of the phrased notation, though. Also, it will take me a while to get used to the song numbers being centered with the title although that's not a big deal. It may be that we are just most comfortable with what we are used to...? Over-all the hard work that went into this hymnal is very evident. Good job!

Starting a new work and needed song books that combined multiple books... This one met those criteria....
