Sermon Notes
by David Banning
Learning How to Listen When God's Word is Being Taught
This class will deal with more than theory. The students will actually be practicing the art of better listening as part of their work for this class. Our approach in this workbook is a little bit different in that the material for study is not provided by the author of this book. Your subject matter will be drawn from the sermons the students hear and then analyzed by them.
STEP #1 Use your first class period to teach through the material in the introduction. It talks about the importance of listening and how to become a better listener.
STEP #2 At the end of your first class, assign the students the responsibility to take notes on one of the sermons that is preached that Sunday. A sheet for taking notes is provided with each week's material (see page 5 for the first week). If you have two sermons presented on Sunday, make sure all students take notes on the same one.
STEP #3 The students should then use these notes to analyze that sermon before coming back to class. They should identify the theme and the main points. They should be sure they understood each of these points. Finally, they should see how they can apply this sermon to their lives.
STEP #4 Use the next class period to discuss their analysis and application of this sermon.
Repeat this process for the next 12 weeks of class, using the material in the sermons as the basis for your class discussions. However, do not forget that the overall objective is to improve their skills as listeners. Each week students are asked to evaluate themselves as listeners. Be sure to discuss these evaluations and talk about how they can improve.
